“California courts have held that … parents do not have a constitutional right to home school their children,” Justice H. Walter Croskey said.
The decision stunned parents of the state’s roughly 166,000 homeschooled children. While the court claimed that it was merely clarifying an existing law and not making a new one, the decision leaves the parents of homeschooled children at risk of arrest and criminal prosecution!
“We’re happy,” said Lloyd Porter, who is on the California Teachers Association board of directors. “We always think students should be taught by credentialed teachers, no matter what the setting.”
I don’t know what to say about Underoath. I just criticized Hawthorne Heights for not being hard enough, then I listen to this and it’s too hard for my personally liking.
I really dig their “Only Chasing Safety”, it’s when it gets to the point where they don’t even sing anymore, it’s just screaming all the time. I have 3 kids that can do that, I don’t need more of it.
I want a nice balance between hard rock, screaming, and solid vocals.
I guess I should just shut up until Emery put’s out another album.
I’ve given the new Hawthorne Heights albums a few listen and it’s growing on me. I find myself always wanting them to be a little harder then what they are. So I was hoping for a more aggressive sound on this album.
All in all though, it’s a solid Hawthorne Heights Album and worth it for any emo fan. The Song above is “The Business of Paper Star”, it’s the first track on the album, and one of the better ones.
Most of us grew up believing that our worth comes from how smart, competent, fast, better skilled and good we are. But Jesus invites us to die to all of that so that we can really live
I was very confused at first as to why this DVD was being mass distributed in Columbus, and after watching the movie I only became outraged and sadden at the obvious propaganda campaign going on here.
These videos are funded by Clarion Fund, conveniently a private 501 3c so they don’t have to release where their funds come from. although I thought it was illegal to use your 501 3c to politically persuade people, hence the separation of church and state.
I am not critical of their first amendment right to free speech, they can make what ever kind of movie they want. They can even put it on the Internet for free. What troubles me is when the “free” and “honest” press start delivering right wing DVD’s less then two months before the election. And what bothers me the most is that these DVD’s where only sent out in “Swing States”, states that could decide the election, like Ohio and North Carolina. States that John McCain has to win in order to become President. A blog here has comments from all over the country of places that have received this DVD, and yes there are people who are happy these are going out.
And who do you think benefits from this war-mongering scare tactic. An antiwar Democrat or a preemptive war Republican. Not accusing the McCain camp of having anything to do with this, Just logically saying any mention of radical Islams would favor McCain. They even link to such websites as Radical Islam.org.
I was so worked up by this stunt, that I wrote a letter to the editor of the Columbus Dispatch, I doubt very highly that they will publish it, but I just couldn’t let it go with out voicing my concern. This is the extend letter below, I had to cut it down in order to actually send it.
To whom it may concern,
I have never in my life complained about the newspaper, it’s not in my personality. But with this weeks newspaper there was an insert of a free DVD, entitled Obsession: Radical Islam’s War Against the West. I am sure you are well away of this.
Let me start by expressing the sickening feeling I had in my stomach when I saw the paid advertisement of such a obvious propaganda campaign. These movies weren’t only paid for by the Clairon Fund, of which there is very little information about where they receive their funds, and who sits on their board of directors, assuming they have one. But to find out these movies were only sent to “Swing States” is very disturbing indeed. I wonder if it is legal for them to use their tax exempt status to try to persuade voters in Ohio.
At this point in the election year, with McCain trailing slightly in the polls, any mention of Islamic terrorist favors the preemptive war policy of the Republicans. I am not a Democratic either, so this is not “party bashing”. I find my self disappointed in the Columbus Dispatch for accepting this advertisement.
But I had to explain to my 7 year old this morning why he couldn’t watch the “army” movie that was in the paper. I think this is setting a dangerous president, that hurts the creditably of free and honest news.
I am certain that the dispatch will claim the first amendment for their reason of accepting this advertisement. I am NOT against the idea of somebody making a movie like this, I am not even against the idea of putting this movie on the Internet for free. I clearly understand the bounds of the first amendment. But that line becomes blurred when these movies are mass distributed by the press, in what seems to be an effort to effect the out come of the up coming election.
I am sure that was not the Dispatches motivate, but imagine what your subscribers are thinking.
I have no doubt that radical Islam is a threat, but lets not over hype the potential danger. This feels a lot like yelling fire in a movie theater. You still have a better chance of being hit by lighting twice in the same day, then being a victim of a terrorist attack.
I am also troubled that movie does not address what makes this very small percentage of Muslims radical and anti-American. And the agenda is backed by cutting and pasting select movie clips that only validated their view.
The modern-day Islamic movement originated in 1977 when the CIA began funding the rebel organization that was trying to destabilize the communist government that ruled Afghanistan.
United States Agency for International Development paid $51 million to have Islamic text books printed that stressed the importance of Jihad, and killing Infidels. This can be backed up by “Teaching ABCs and Jihad” that appeared in the April 1-7, 2002 issue of The Washington Post National Weekly Edition.
I am shocked about the decision to accept the advertisement, and can only hope it was weighed over greatly about the consequences it could have.
Maybe it’s just me, and I shouldn’t care. I should just let apathy take over and enjoy my ipod.
We should be on our guard against our government officials, binding then down from mischief by the chains of the constitution. – 113
This is one of those books that is perfect for people who are annoyed by the hypocrisy of politics. Ron Paul, is honest, straight to the point and short about what has happened to our government.
At only 168 pages, it’s a quick, very informative look at what constitutional freedom looks like, not the freedom that is being passed off from the media.
Our Constitution was written to restrain government, not the people -pg135
His ideas are addictive, unlike the bandaid polices of Obama and McCain. That only patch the problem for 4 to 8 years, just long enough to pass it to the next President.
it’s a shame that the only real candidate that would have changed Washington, from top to bottom was censored out of the election, and restricted from the debates.
So me and the family took a mini vacation on Friday and Saturday. First we went to Lebanon, Ohio for “A Day Out With Thomas“. Which is a 3 year olds fantasy. They set up a bunch of tents and booths, you walk around playing with Thomas the Tank engine play tables, getting Thomas Tattoo’s, and riding on a real train.
Then we took a short trip over to IKEA. Which is responsible for the cup full of mini golf pencils. I have an office supply fetish and they just prance these little pencil stations around all over the place, it was more then I could take. So I helped myself to a couple.
Then we checked into a Hotel a couple miles South of Cincinnati. The Hyatt Place. maybe the nicest Hotel I will ever stay in. They offered a deal, which is the only reason we stayed there. You got 4 tickets for the aquarium in Newport, Kentucky. They proudly serve Starbucks coffee with their continental breakfast for free! So I helped myself to some of their TAZO tea, seeing as how I also have a tea fetish.
Then we head over to the Newport Aquarium for my first visit. It was fun, a nice walk through at your own pace. Emery didn’t not like the dark glass tunnels with creepy music. Thats one way to start an autistic fit. But boy did he love looking on the map and updating you every time you entered a new area!
Jack thought everything was awesome! the ugly the fish the cooler it was. The best part by far was the very end. They have a shark tank where you can reach your hand in and pet a shark as it swims by. Jack was all up for this, and wasted no time. Abby was not so sure. So I showed her by petting a couple sharks that these were nice sharks, and they weren’t going to bite. She was trying so hard to brave it up, she’d say ” OK, Daddy i want to pet one” then one gets with in 2 feet and she starts shaky and crying and pulls her hand out.
We repeated this game 5 or 6 times, until she asked me to hold her hand and touch it with her. So i grab her hand, and when the first shark came by we reached into the water and touched it. That put her over the edge, she starts crying uncontrollably. At this point I notice the employee working the shark tank eye balling me, like I was trying to feed her to the shark or something.
luckily Tammy came by and scooped Abby up and calmed her down. That was it, excepted for the ride home from Cincinnati. That should have taken less then 2 hours. But thanks to an accident that shut down I-71 North for hours! it took us 6 and a half hours to get hour.
The bright side was we got to stop our car on the freeway and get out. So we walked over to an under pass to explore, and found a wrencth and a dead squirrel. What kids going to forget that vacation!
There is a Starbucks inside the Kroger right next to where I work, once a week for the last year, I go in on Thursday and get a black coffee.
Thats my little treat for going to work 4 days in a row! ya me.
The girl that works there has officially spoiled me, she knows what I want and doesn’t even ask me anymore.
I haven’t had to ask for black coffee in almost 2 months.
A couple of weeks ago, I got stuck behind this other lady who was ordering one of this pre-Madonna coffee cocktails, that takes 5 minutes to even pronounce. Then she couldn’t find her credit card, then they made it wrong.
So in the mist of this, the girl who knows me, got a black coffee and handed it to me, she quitely said “this could take a while”, I paid cash, as always, and I always leave the nickel for them.
So that was it, I officially got to ditch someone in a Starbucks line.
If only everyone knew what I wanted with out asking!
Just watched the new movie from Jason Bermas, the director of “Loose Change”. It’s a more journalist researched look at what happened on 911. They take a look at the events that lead up to and the events afterwards.
There is some startling facts presented that definitely push 911 from a bad day where multiple governments agencies failed to do their jobs. To some ugly premeditated plan of action.
